Director of Research at the National Center for Scientific Research ‘Demokritos’ in Athens
Greece

Dr. Dimitrios Mastellos is Director of Research at the National Center for Scientific Research ‘Demokritos’ in Athens, Greece. His research interests lie in the field of innate immunity, complement-driven inflammation and therapeutics. He applies both in vitro and in vivo approaches for interrogating the role of innate immune pathways in human pathophysiology. Dr. Mastellos is a Biologist and holds a Ph.D. in Immunology from the Medical School of the University of Patras on the role of complement-triggered pathways in liver regeneration. He pursued postdoctoral research with Prof. John Lambris at the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine of the University of Pennsylvania, on the role of complement-triggered pathways in diverse biological processes ranging from tissue regeneration and anaphylatoxin-triggered inflammation to stem cell engraftment and early hematopoietic development. His research at ‘Demokritos’ focuses on the integrative evaluation of novel complement-based biomarkers for disease prognosis, staging and therapy. He has co-authored 56 publications and 3 book chapters on topics of innate immunity, complement pathobiology and host-pathogen interactions (Scopus h-index: 27, citations >3,000). His research has been funded by the NIH, EU (FP7), the Greek Secretariat of Research and Technology, Empirikion Foundation, ESCMID and other charities
